Unlike other species, the way chameleon eggs lay and incubate is quite a fascinating process. Chameleons lay their eggs in a wide arc and then roll into a circular pattern for protection. Once the outer layer of the egg is sealed over, the chameleon eggs can then incubate for a few months and then hatch.
Fact 5: Chameleons Have Compound Eyes
Compound eyes, such as the one seen in chameleons, contain thousands of lenses in each eye. Not only do these lenses help chameleons see in the dark, but they also allow them to detect the slightest movement around them. This amazing sense of sight provides chameleons the necessary protection during predator avoidance and when seeking out prey.
Fact 6: Chameleons Have Extra Digits to Help With Climbing
One of the most amazing adaptations in chameleons is that they have an extra digit on their feet. This helps them in delicate and difficult climbs as they can anchor themselves even more securely to surfaces. Additionally, since their feet are flexible and can wrap around branches, it allows them to rest or sleep without fear that they will fall.
